COMPANION JOURNAL
This affirmations calendar was created alongside the Daily Connection Journal to help you slow down and create moments of mindfulness among family members. Check out the Daily Connection Journal: a guided journal for kids and adolescents to pause and connect with parents, just for a moment. This journal started as a personal project that saved me over the summer, and now it’s been edited and improved to be available for you, in 3 variations. It’s truly wonderful.

“What a neat idea, I haven’t seen anything like it! I love all the images and I can’t wait to color it with my sister-in-law.”
— Sarah G., Seattle.
“Your coloring tips are so good! We’re having so much fun with the calendar, including my 16 y-o. It’s been fun to turn to a new uncolored page each month.”
— Jennifer M., Nashville.
COLORING METHODS WITH COLORING PENCILS
Here is a video showing you some coloring methods and tips, using coloring pencils:
Basic oblique strokes; chicken scratch technique; lines following long shapes; spirals/springs; following the outline of the shape to color; and flicks!

Experiment with mediums
If you are shopping for pencils, choose “soft core” coloring pencils like these, for more satisfying results :) Any pencils will feel so good, though, because the paper is awesome and versatile. And so will markers, pastels, and light gouache. If you try something else and it works, let me know!
Experiment with colors
Choose your color palette before you start, or start with two colors, and add 2-3 more as you go.
Hang it up anyway!
It’s okay to color your drawing in multiple stages. Hang it up even if it’s not finished, even if it’s messy, and come back to it when you are ready to do more. Or don’t come back to it. Do what you feel but hang it up either way!
Leave some white
It’s ok if you choose only some elements to color. White space intentionally chosen can make an artwork look just as beautiful as a fully colored one.
Create challenges
Challenge yourself to use only 2 colors (maybe in different intensities), mixing medias like markers and pastels, color with only dots all over, or doodle inside the shapes with thin felt pens. What else can you do?
Make it a team artwork
Invite multiple family members to color. You can choose the color palette together first, and whoever has a minute can contribute to the artwork!

USING THE AFFIRMATIONS
The affirmations on your Affirmations Calendar are mindfully chosen to raise your spirits every day. But for this to happen, you have to be able to see them—one at a time—every day of the year!
See it daily
Hang the calendar in a place where you and members of your family can see it every day.
See it daily—again
Sometimes, when something is in the same spot for a long time, we don’t see it anymore. Change the place of your calendar each month or every few weeks if you can, so you keep noticing it. So it doesn’t blend in the background.
Hang it up anyway!
Hang your calendar whether it was colored or not. Keep it in a visible spot while you color it.
Say it out loud
Say the affirmation out loud when you pass by your calendar, and ask your children or family members to do the same. Remind yourself/each other of the affirmations when the time is right; when you are in a situation where one of the affirmations is relevant.
Elaborate, ponder
Discuss the monthly affirmation each month, journal about it, elaborate on it… For example, “I love and respect myself:” What do I love about myself? Do I use kind words when I think about myself? Even when I mess up? How can I be kinder and more gentle with myself when I make mistakes? Etc.
Add your own
Write affirmations of your own—statements that make you feel good, and get in the habit of repeating them and feeling them. You deserve to feel good about yourself because you are worthy and deserving. You are a better friend and a better parent/child when you love who you are.
